The CDU (Christian Democratic Union) of the local council commented on the topic in a press release.

On 4 June 2013 BUG held a public talk on the above-mentioned subject in cooperation with ‘AStA’ of the University Hanover and Hanover’s local anti-discrimination commissioner. Specific steps towards tackling ethnic discrimination when entering leisure facilities were discussed. BUG will implement these steps in cooperation with all persons/institutions involved in the coming months.

On 14 August 2013 the local court of Hanover announced the verdict concerning Murat F.’s complaint. The defendant nightclub is sentenced to pay a compensation of 1,000 € to the plaintiff and has to refrain from unjustified rejection in the future. If this is not done, a fine of up to € 250,000 may be imposed. BUG’s press release about the verdict can be found here.

Lawsuit comes to an unfruitful end

In July 2014, the plaintiff wanted to enter a nightclub in Hanover with a friend and was denied entry with the remark that only regular guests would be admitted. The plaintiff then asked how he could become a regular guest and was told that it was impossible for him as a 'Turk'.

The person concerned got in touch with BUG and legal support was offered. After asserting the discrimination to the nightclub a mediation took place in November 2014. In early February 2015, BUG prepared the lawsuit. In this context, BUG realised that the club had changed hands and thus a claim could not be lodged.

BUG is still active on this issue in Hanover to curb this form of discrimination.
